E.H.Y.C. History

Where it all began.

Established in June 1969, Eagle Harbour Yacht Club has been a place where like-minded individuals come together to embrace adventure and forge lasting connections. As a non-profit organization registered under the Societies Act, we are driven by our passion for sailing and fostering a welcoming community of enthusiasts.

Our small harbour has a rich history prior to the establishment of the club.

From the late 1800s until the 1910s the current parking lot was home to a salmon cannery where fishing boats would unload their cargo to be processed. After the cannery closed, a marina was established that was primarily used for sportfishermen. The owner of the marina lived in the house above and a small store existed where we store paddleboards today.

The beach beside the club was long known to be a popular swimming destination and even featured a wooden diving tower and swimming lanes at one point.

Across the bay from the club, above the large rock face, was once a small replica Greek Parthenon that was built by a local business man in honour of his wife who missed her homeland.

History of the EHYC Club Burgee

The Annual General Meeting of 1969 held in the West Vancouver Community Centre was the occasion of a contest for the design of the Club Burgee. Samples were displayed on the wall and members present selected the design submitted by Jim Court, then Executive Secretary. Jim chose the International flags “E” and “H” as the basis for his burgee. To separate the two, a white line transversely bisects the flag from hoist to f ly. The anchor superimposed on the field denotes the anchorage or harbour, the whole therefore representing Eagle Harbour Anchorage. The design also lent itself to a two-sided presentation. When the Burgees were issued, No 1 went to the first Commodore, Bob Hafey. The prototype, never issued as a burgee, was framed and presented to its designer by the Executive Officers of the Club. …edited from a 1975 article by past commodore John McCarthy.

Of course, this is just a small piece of the rich history of our beautiful home in Eagle Harbour. We hope to continue to add to the story as time goes on.
